The Effect of Infrequent Feeding on the Wool Production of Merino Sheep

چکیده

The hypothesis that infrequent feeding of sheep supports a higher rate of wool growth than frequent (daily) feeding was examined using oats grain and three roughages of varying protein content. The wool growth of Merino ewes fed every third and sixth day was significantly greater than that of similar ewes fed every day, when averaged over the four diets. Increased wool production due to infrequent feeding appeared to be related to rate of intake rather than directly to the protein content of the ration.

Comparison of feeding value of a treated sea plant, Posidonia australis, with lucerne, pasture and wheat

An experiment was carried out to compare the effect of feeding posidonia australis as a non-conventional feedstuff with cereal straw for sheep maintenance; and to compare seagrass/chicken litter with lucerne hay and pasture for sheep production on a scale such as would be applicable to lot-feeding of sheep in the area of suthern Australia in case of short term feed scarcity. To approach this ta...

Effects of crude glycerin supplementation on wool production, feeding behavior, and body condition of Merino ewes.

The increasing availability of crude glycerin from the biodiesel industry has led to an interest in its use as an energy source in ruminant diets. However, its effects on ruminal fermentation patterns and methane (CH4) production are unclear, and there are no reports on the effect of its inclusion in the diet on wool production or growth of Merino sheep. Thus, the objectives of this study were ...

Production responses of two genetic different types of Merino sheep subjected to different nutritional levels.

The primary selection objective in the South African Mutton Merino is meat production, while wool plays a secondary role. The Merino, on the other hand is selected for wool production. Respectively 20 and 23 of each genetic different type of ewes were used in a 15-week indoor study to quantify the influence of nutrient intake on certain production traits when fed at different levels of their re...

Wool quality traits of purebred and crossbred Merino lambs orally drenched with Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis)

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Spirulina supplementation, sire breed and sex on the wool characteristics of purebred and crossbred Merino weaned lambs under a single pasture-based management system. Lambs sired by Merino, White Suffolk, Dorset, Black Suffolk breeds were randomly allocated into 3 treatments – the control group grazing without Spirulina (0 mL), low (100...

A Comparison of Damara Crossbred and Merino Lambs Wool

Lambs wool production and qualities from the progeny of 2 Merino and 2 Damara rams mated to Merino ewes were compared. The crossbred lambs produced about half the amount of wool and had high fibre diameter variation and medullated fibre components. Merino lambs wool was contaminated with pigmented and medullated fibres apparently transferred from continual exposure to the Damara crossbred lambs...
